The GSO Forum to Adopt and Implement a Workplace Strategy on Diabetes and Wellness took place on Thursday 25 September 2008 at the International Labour Organization in Geneva, Switzerland.
This multistakeholder Forum was part of the GSO Programme on Diabetes and Social Responsibility and follows the successful outcome of the Workshop to Develop a Workplace Strategy on Diabetes and Wellness that took place on 18 and 19 March 2008. During the Forum participants had the opportunity to hear case studies and presentations on how the Workplace Strategy complements existing wellness programs, the risks and benefits involved in adopting it and mobilizing for action to implement the Strategy. The GSO is grateful for the help with Forum arrangements given by the ILO SafeWork programme. The key outcomes of Phase Two are summarized in the Forum Report and the Workplace Strategy on Diabetes and Wellness adopted at the Forum Other Forum documents:
The GSO Workshop to Develop a Workplace Strategy on Diabetes and Wellness, preceded the September Forum.
The workshop was held 18 to 19 March 2008, in Geneva Switzerland, at the Varembé Conference Centre. The purpose of the Workshop was to prepare a first draft of a working strategy document that provides a compelling rationale for concerted action to use the workplace as an outlet to educate and inform employers and workers about diabetes and thereby save lives and improve productivity. The participants divided themselves into three working groups: the first one dealt with the preamble and scope of the problem; the second working group addressed prevention and wellness in the workplace and the third group discussed the treatment, care and support of diabetes in the workplace. The groups met during three working sessions to develop their respective components of the strategy. The main product of the workshop, developed in the working group sessions, was the Proposed Workplace Strategy on Diabetes and Wellness.
The Workshop Meeting Report provides a summary with additional details. Additional related documents are listed below: The Workshop included several presentations:
The Backgrounder and Appendices on diabetes, wellness, and workplace issues were distributed to participants in advance of the workshop to provide informational materials. Each working group was given Questions to Help Moderators (PDF). The Working Group Progress Report (PDF) summarizes their discussions from the first day, which evolved into the Draft Strategy.
Subsequent to the workshop, the Planning Committee of the GSO Diabetes Project met on 10 April 2008 to take forward the ideas resulting from the workshop and to provide additional input on further vetting and validation of the strategy (see Action Items). A major proposal was to convene the forum to adopt the Workplace Strategy and propose avenues for its implementation. The Third Phase
of the Project is to deal with issues of
implementation. |
